A little history of World Card Making Day

“World Card Making Day” is a special event that Stampin’ Up! celebrates to spotlight and promote the art of making handmade cards — and to nurture community among paper crafters.

Here’s a breakdown of what it means, what typically happens, and why it’s significant:

What it is

It’s a craft-celebration day, focused on card making (stamping, decorating, designing).

Stampin’ Up! hosts a free virtual event where participants can craft along, learn new techniques, see demonstrations, and make cards live with presenters.

They often produce a card kit (for example, “Handmade & Heartfelt Kit”) that includes everything needed to make a set of cards (card bases, envelopes, embellishments, stamps, etc.) so that attendees (or even people who watch later) can make the same projects.

Even if you don’t use their kit, you’re encouraged to join in with supplies you already have or just watch and get inspired.

Underlying Purpose / Meaning

1. Celebrate creativity & the joy of handmade cards

One of the main goals is to honour the personal touch, thoughtfulness, and artistic process behind handmade cards. It’s a day to say: “Making cards is meaningful.”

2. Community & Connection

Stampin’ Up! emphasizes that crafting connects people — sharing ideas, techniques, stories, and support among crafters.

It’s an opportunity for demonstrators and customers to connect in real time (or virtually) and feel part of a larger crafting family.

3. Inspiration & Learning

By hosting demos and “craft-along” sessions, they aim to inspire crafters (from beginners to advanced) to try new techniques, designs, or product combinations.

4. Brand Engagement & Product Awareness

It also functions as a way for Stampin’ Up! to showcase their products (kits, stamps, embellishments) and get people excited about their crafting lines. The kit tied to the event is often a focal point.🤗

History & Origins

  • World Card Making Day’s origin (beyond Stampin’ Up!)
The idea of World Card Making Day dates back to a papercrafting / cardmaking community initiative. According to several sources, the event was first celebrated in 2006 as part of Paper Crafts Magazine’s efforts to encourage people to make handmade cards rather than buy them.
Over time, many crafting companies, including Stampin’ Up!, picked it up and made it a flag event in their calendar.
  • Adoption by Stampin’ Up!
Stampin’ Up! now treats World Card Making Day as an annual flagship event. Their blog describes it as “the perfect day to enjoy the connection that the Stampin’ Up! community has to offer.”
They run a free virtual event on that day (or around it), open to all crafters (not just customers), with a “craft-along” format, demonstrations, and inspiration.
They also provide a special kit tied to the event each year — for example, the “Handmade & Heartfelt Kit” in 2025.
  • When it’s held
Stampin’ Up! always places the event on the first Saturday of October, aligning with the broader World Card Making Day tradition.
In 2025, the event is scheduled for Saturday, October 4 (2:00–3:00 pm Mountain Time) in their time zone.
  • Evolution / changes over time
    • The event has become more polished and consistent, with pre-registration, broadcast via YouTube, and attendee “gifts.”
    • The offering of kits to craft along has become standard. That ensures that participants (even beginners) can follow the same projects with materials provided.
    • The virtual event is recorded and made available afterward.
    • Many demonstrators and stamping bloggers also run watch parties, local in-person meetups, and follow-up “bonus” projects or challenges.
    • Over the years, they’ve incorporated more advanced techniques, special effects, or themed designs (e.g., globe or map motifs) as examples.
    • Also, Stampin’ Up! sometimes pairs the event with promotions (e.g. free shipping, special discounts) around that time. For example, in 2023 they offered three days of free shipping after WCMD.

Examples / Projects Over the Years

Here are some notable examples and themes used in past events, to show how creative the projects get and how the event is used as inspiration:

  • Map / Globe / “World” themes
In 2023 and 2024, many stamping bloggers shared globe- or map-themed cards as part of their World Card Making Day “parades.”
For example, Stamp With Brian in 2024 posted a “parade” of creative map and globe cards using various retired and current Stampin’ Up! products.
  • Techniques & “showy” methods
In a past WCMD, a demonstrator showed the shaving cream technique (a marbling effect using shaving cream + reinkers) during their live event.
Another blog (Debbie Henderson) posted a couple of techniques in WCMD projects in previous years, illustrating how materials or inks can be used in interesting ways.
  • Member / blogger participation
Many independent Stampin’ Up! demonstrators use their WCMD projects as content for their blogs and social media:
    • For WCMD 2024, “Stamp With Jenn” posted the cards made during the event plus additional cards made afterward, with supply lists and tips.
    • “Kristine McNickle” (a NZ demonstrator) re-posted the event they held for October 2024 and shared the fun projects and replay links.
    • Many “Just Stampin’” posts (a blog category) archive their WCMD content over the years.

  • Promotions / shipping / bonuses
In 2023, Stampin’ Up! offered free shipping for three days (for orders over a threshold) in conjunction with WCMD.
Also, participants who registered often receive a “thank you” gift after the event.
  • Kits & included materials
The 2025 “Handmade & Heartfelt Kit” is a good example of how they package the project materials. That kit includes:
    • A coordinating stamp set
    • 10 pre-printed card bases and envelopes
    • Die-cut shaped labels
    • Twine, glitter adhesive embellishments
    • A mini ink pad
    • A card organizer box
    • Everything pre-cut and ready to assemble for 10 “all-occasion” cards

  • This allows participants to follow along more easily during the live/demo portion.
